Announcing the Search for the Next Dean of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
Thursday, September, 3rd, 2026 Announcements
Dear Tufts community,
We are writing today to announce the launch of a search to identify the next dean of Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. As you may be aware from the announcement in May, Melissa Mazan began serving as dean ad interim on September 1. This follows the departure of Dean Emeritus Alastair Cribb after several years of dedicated service to the Cummings School and Tufts communities.
Over the summer, President Kumar met with the executive faculty board of Cummings School to get their early thoughts on what they feel should be reflected in the next leader of the school. We also interviewed several search firms to ensure alignment of their process with the feedback we heard along with our mission and values.
Helen W. Boucher, dean of the Tufts University School of Medicine and chief academic officer of Tufts Medicine, will serve as the chair of the search committee. The search committee members are:
- Hellen Amuguni, Professor, Infectious Disease & Global Health, Cummings School
- Daniela Bedenice, Marilyn M. Simpson Professor in Equine Medicine, Cummings School (Faculty Senate Representative)
- Elizabeth Byrnes, Professor, Comparative Pathobiology, Cummings School

- Dano Weisbord, Chief Sustainability Officer and Associate Vice President for Campus Planning
The search firm Korn Ferry has been retained to support the work of the committee, which will begin its work this month. To inform the development of the position profile, we are seeking broad input from across the Cummings School community. Please be on the lookout for invitations to participate in listening sessions and share your perspectives on the school’s current trajectory, key opportunities and challenges, and the qualities and experience needed in a leader to guide the school successfully into its next chapter. In the meantime, anyone at the university may forward any thoughts, comments, or candidate recommendations to provost@tufts.edu.
Sending you best wishes for the academic year.
Sincerely,
Sunil Kumar
President
