Dear members of the Tufts community,

I am pleased to announce that following a national search, Monroe France (mon-rOH frAnss, he/him/his pronouns) has been appointed Tufts’ first vice provost for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ). In addition, he will have a faculty appointment as Professor of Practice at Tisch College of Civic Life. Vice Provost France will begin both roles on April 3, 2023.   

 

About the Vice Provost for DEIJ 

As Vice Provost for DEIJ, France will expand and look holistically at Tufts’ definition of diversity to include the full spectrum of ethnicities, national origins, ages, sexual orientations, gender identities, beliefs, religions and faiths, cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, neurotypes, and abilities. 

Vice Provost France will provide vision, leadership, and oversight of university wide DEIJ efforts, ensuring we work in unison toward our collective goals and that members of our diverse, multifaceted communities feel supported. This includes:  

  • Ensuring measurable accountabilities for all Tufts DEIJ initiatives 

  • Guiding DEIJ programming 

  • Integrating inclusive pedagogy 

  • Collaborating on student recruitment, enrollment, and retention 

  • Creating recruitment and retention strategies for faculty and staff 

  • Liaising with stakeholder groups and advisors 

      

About Monroe France 

France currently serves as New York University’s (NYU) senior associate vice president for global engagement and inclusive leadership where he works with leaders to enhance inclusion, diversity, belonging, equity, and access opportunities throughout the University’s global network. He also serves as lead instructor for NYU Global Inclusive Leadership and Management Institute and is the founder and co-principal of NYU Environmental and Racial Justice Network. He has worked extensively with NYU’s health sciences schools to ensure healthy equity, including co-launching the Global Black Health Matters series in partnership with Ubitquita. 

With more than 25 years of global experience as an educator, strategist, consultant, trainer, and presenter spanning across higher education, non-profits, corporate sectors, arts and creative industries, and humanitarian and philanthropy initiatives, he understands how to create sustainable institutional change. Our Collective Work  

I am proud of our community’s ongoing commitment to make Tufts more welcoming and inclusive, and I appreciate how this looks different across the university. As I look forward to Vice Provost France’s expertise and collaborative approach, I acknowledge the significant work we have ahead of usCreating meaningful, institutional change is—and always will be—an ongoing, collective effortA major milestone will be when we begin to think, feel, and act with DEIJ as the center of our work, and when all faculty, staff, and students feel safe, valued, seen, and heard. As a strong believer in what he refers to as “co-creating transformative possibilities,” Vice Provost France looks forward to rooting himself in the Tufts community starting in April.
