 A Few Guiding “Principles”

  • It is important to know your own identities and how these shape your perceptions, biases and choices. (See Know How Your Own Background Influences Your Teaching).
  • How your students perceive you has an impact on their learning – remember there are at least 6 people in the conversation (who you think you are, who they think you are, who you think they are, who they think they are, who you think they think you are, who they think you think they are)
  • It’s not just what you say, it’s how you say it.
  • It is important to think about privilege rather than victims.
  • Engagement and a sense of community are essential in an inclusive environment.
  • Climate must be consciously constructed and maintained.
