Deadline March 15th, 2012<\/strong>: Two new paid summer opportunities for graduate students with Torch Scholars Program, working with first-generation college students in a Summer Immersion Program at Northeastern University.<\/p>\n

Two Graduate Assistants<\/strong> needed to manage the day-to-day program management of a 6-week summer immersion program for 10 first-generation college students in the Torch Scholars Program. Graduate Assistants work as a team to provide consistent, high-level support and student development opportunities. Graduate Assistants receive a stipend and room\/board for the duration of the Program. We are looking for applicants who are dedicated to fostering a rigorous learning environment and building a positive community and group identity for a cohort of first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds across the country. Applicants with a desire to work directly with students as counselor\/teacher\/advisor are strongly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities include student advising, assessment, counseling, classroom teaching, and planning. Successful candidates should feel comfortable modeling and facilitating leadership and team building exercises for students. GA\u2019s report directly to the Torch Scholars Program Director during the Summer Immersion Program and collaborate with NU professional staff and faculty from Admissions, Residence Life, Career Services, Financial Aid, UHCS, Civic Engagement, and teaching faculty. The Torch Scholars Program (Torch) at Northeastern University is dedicated to closing the achievement gap for first-generation, low-income students through a two-pronged effort: a full scholarship covering a pre-college program and eight subsequent semesters of study, and a comprehensive support program that is designed to improve the college retention rate, leadership opportunities, social capital, and academic achievement of each student.<\/p>\n

Start date: June 18 (some flexibility); end date \u2013 August 18. $3,500 stipend plus room\/board.<\/p>\n

Opportunity Scholarships and Outreach Programs at Northeastern University is currently interviewing for Graduate Assistants to manage the Torch Scholars Summer Immersion Program. The Office of Opportunity Scholarships and Outreach Programs at Northeastern University is committed to serving nearly 200 first-generation, low income students of diverse backgrounds through student programming and holistic support services beginning with a pre-college summer immersion and following each student through graduation and alumni services. The office works as a team to practice student-centered advising, life-skills coaching, holistic support, and retention plans through five different scholarship programs geared toward the specific needs of first-generation, low-income students at a rigorous four-year university. The unit manages the noncognitive selection process for the competitive Torch Scholars Program, where 500 students nationally apply for a full scholarship and support services, and a cohort of 10 are selected each year. In addition, the unit is in the process of developing a research agenda around the Torch Program and indicators of success for first-generation, low-income students in higher education based on best practices of the Program. The unit is responsible for building a national presence through presentations and publications, as well as social media. The\u00a0 unit manages a diverse network of community and school partnerships and outreach programs to promote a college-going culture in urban school districts and is noted for its LEAD (Linking Education and Diversity) College Access Program and for its education around the Gates Millennium Scholarship for high school students.<\/p>\n
