{"id":4916,"date":"2017-02-01T16:28:37","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T16:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-tufts-provost.pantheonsite.io\/celt\/?page_id=4916"},"modified":"2017-08-23T20:20:25","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T20:20:25","slug":"understanding-commonly-used-terms","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/provost.tufts.edu\/celt\/initiatives\/inclusive\/learning-about-inclusion\/understanding-commonly-used-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding Commonly Used Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.&#8221; &#8211; George Orwell 1984<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Diversity<\/h2>\n<p>Individual differences (e.g., personality, learning styles, and life experiences) and group\/social differences (e.g., race\/ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, country of origin, and ability as well as cultural, political, religious, or other affiliations).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Inclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity\u2014in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in communities (intellectual, social, cultural, geographical) with which individuals might connect\u2014in ways that increase awareness, content knowledge, cognitive sophistication, and empathic understanding of the complex ways individuals interact within systems and institutions.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Equity<\/h2>\n<p>The creation of opportunities for historically underrepresented populations to have equal access to and participate in educational programs that are capable of closing the achievement gaps in student success and completion.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/aacu.org\/making-excellence-inclusive<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Stereotype Threat<\/h2>\n<p>Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, negative stereotype about one&#8217;s group. This term was first used by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reducingstereotypethreat.org\/bibliography_steele_aronson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steele and Aronson (1995)<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>who\u00a0showed\u00a0in several experiments that Black college freshmen and sophomores performed more poorly on standardized tests than White students when their race was emphasized. When race was not emphasized, however, Black students performed better and equivalently with White students.\u00a0The results showed that performance in academic contexts can be harmed by the awareness that one&#8217;s behavior might be viewed through the lens of racial stereotypes. Are there times when someone has made a comment unwittingly that felt like a microagression toward you or someone you know? Were you able to respond? Or if you were not able at the time, how would you respond?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2.) Have you caught yourself saying something that could be a microaggression? How did you handle it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3.) How might you catch yourself, or create a climate that allows your students to point it out if it happens<em>?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Resources:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We all makes mistakes, and we have all been hurt or watched others be hurt or offended.
