Dear Members of the Tufts Community,
It is my great pleasure to announce that after an extensive and exhaustive international search, we have selected Ambassador Alan D. Solomont as the Pierre and Pamela Omidyar Dean of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. Ambassador Solomont will assume the deanship on January 2, 2014. Until then, Tisch College will continue to be led by its outstanding interim dean, Nancy Wilson.
Ambassador Solomont is a proud Tufts alumnus, having earned a B.A. in Political Science and Urban Studies in 1970, as well as a Tufts spouse (Susan, M.Ed 1981) and parent (Becca, B.A. 2008). As a member of the Board of Trustees, Ambassador Solomont was a key leader in both the founding of what became Tisch College, and as Chair of the Tisch College Board of Advisors. He also taught for four years at Tufts as part of Tisch College. His undergraduate seminar on the American presidency was known in part for the political luminaries and other leaders it brought to campus.
Outside of Tufts, Ambassador Solomont has also been an extremely active citizen. He has served as a member, and then chairman, of the bipartisan Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which oversees all federal domestic service programs. Ambassador Solomont has also served on the boards of directors for several nonprofit and for-profit organizations, including the Boston Medical Center, Angel Healthcare Investors, Israel Policy Forum, the University of Lowell and the University of Massachusetts, The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation, and the WGBH Educational Foundation. In 2009 he was nominated to be the U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra, a position he will hold until later this summer.
I look forward to working with Ambassador Solomont and the Tufts community to build on the substantial progress that Tisch College has made in recent years. To read the story on Tufts Now, click here.
