University Seminar Announcement

August 1, 2007

Dear Colleagues:

In the fall I will be formally announcing an exciting new cross-school program called the University Seminar. I'm emailing the faculty now, in advance of the community-wide announcement, so that you can begin thinking of possible proposals to submit.

In a nutshell, the University Seminar will be a team-taught class that involves students and faculty from multiple schools studying a major societal problem (such as AIDS or climate change) from the perspective of various disciplines. The class would be directed by at least two faculty members from at least two schools. Undergraduates in Arts, Sciences and Engineering, as well as students from our graduate and professional schools, will be able to enroll and receive credit for the course. The end product will be a collaborative, student-authored, web-based summary of knowledge and research.

I am enthusiastic about launching the University Seminar because it embodies so many of the goals that we have for Tufts. As a student-centered research university, we need to continually challenge ourselves to live up to what that promises, by leveraging the latent synergies of our unique array of schools and disciplines. I am hoping that the Seminar will not only inspire cross-disciplinary collaboration, but also lead to innovations in teaching and active learning.

Information sessions at each of the schools will be announced early in the semester. Expression of interest letters are due September 28, 2007. For more information about proposing a seminar for the 2008-09 academic year, download the request for proposals from the Provost's Office website.
