Margaret (Peggy) E. Newell

As the vice provost at Tufts University, Margaret E. (Peggy) Newell serves as deputy to the provost, assisting the provost on a broad range of University issues. Newell works with the provost in the strategic development of University priorities, oversees the Office of the Boards of Overseers, and chairs the budget and policy committee for Arts, Sciences and Engineering.

Vice Provost Newell continues to retain all of the responsibilities that she has had from 1998-2004 as Associate Provost for Research. Newell oversees the office of grants and contracts administration, the office of technology and industry collaboration, the use of human subjects and laboratory animals in research, and research programs across Tufts' campuses. She is responsible for implementation of Tufts policies on scientific misconduct and conflict of interest in research. With over 3500 University-wide faculty, staff and researchers, and more than 8,500 students, Newell works with other senior administrators to assure that Tufts University continues to promote and facilitate ethical and high quality studies.

In addition to her responsibilities as vice provost, Newell holds a faculty appointment as assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Medical School. Prior to joining the Provost's Office, she served as the first associate dean for special programs at the School of Medicine and as the first associate dean of the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, where she was instrumental in setting up many of the policies and procedures that govern these programs.

Through the Office of Technology and Industry Collaboration, Newell oversees the patenting and licensing of scientific discoveries and inventions. The goal of this program is to assure that advances made at the University are licensed and further developed by industry so that the public may benefit from new and improved technology, to provide services to the Tufts research community, and to generate income that can be reinvested for the benefit and advancement of research. The Office manages the University's research relationships with industry which, in addition to licensing, include sponsored research, research materials transfer, and collaborations.

The Office of Research Administration is responsible for assisting faculty in the funding process, helping to identify new sources of research funding, and assuring that the University is in compliance with all of the regulations that govern sponsored research. Through this office, faculty members receive assistance with the preparation of proposals for research funding.

Newell received a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School and an M.B.A. from Boston College Graduate School of Management. Her undergraduate degree was in psychology, also from Boston College. She is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.
