Undergraduate Research Initiative

March 26, 2003

Dear Colleagues:

I'm pleased to announce a new Undergraduate Research Initiative designed to significantly enhance opportunities for undergraduates to conduct research with faculty members. The central piece of this initiative, which grew from recommendations made by the Task Force on the Undergraduate Experience, is a Summer Scholars funding program for 30 undergraduates to pursue research projects with faculty on our three Massachusetts campuses as well as Tufts' clinical faculty in our affiliated hospitals.

Students accepted as Summer Scholars will receive a stipend of $3,500 and up to $1,000 to defray research costs. Faculty mentors will receive a research award of $1,000.

As summer and students' applications deadline are quickly approaching, many students will be looking to Tufts faculty for opportunities to collaborate on research. Beginning next Monday, March 31st, a "Research Clearinghouse" will be available on a website through which faculty may post their research opportunities. To receive more information about the Student Scholars program or the Research Clearinghouse, contact Joanne McPherson in the Dean of the Colleges Office at 7-4239 or joanne.mcpherson@tufts.edu. Information will soon be available online.

In addition to the fine work of the Task Force on the Undergraduate Experience, I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Dean Susan Ernst, Interim Dean Vin Manno and Charles Inouye, Dean of the Colleges, in creating and investing in this new program. I will work closely with them to assess this program's first year so that we can ensure its optimal design and results for many years to come. We are committed to the long-term success of this program, and it is a priority in our upcoming capital campaign.

As you know, President Bacow and I believe that Tufts occupies a unique niche in higher education. Tufts combines the quality undergraduate learning experience of smaller liberal arts colleges with the extraordinary opportunity for advancement of knowledge found in the major research universities. It is important that we build upon this strength by providing research opportunities that enable students to collaborate with professors and take part in the process of discovery and creation.

I look forward to working with you in this new initiative, and welcome any questions or ideas you may have.

Best regards,

Jamshed Bharucha
Provost and Senior Vice President
