Provost Bharucha named President-elect of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art

February 6, 2011

Dear Friends:

After more than eight wonderful years at Tufts, the time has come for me to embark upon my next adventure. Today, the trustees of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science & Art will announce my appointment as its twelfth president, effective July 1.

I am honored to have been chosen to lead Cooper Union, one of the most selective colleges in the world and one of the few American institutions to offer free tuition to all admitted students without regard for family circumstances. Its founder, Peter Cooper, articulated soaring ideals that were bold for their time and that resonate strongly for me now. These include: excellence in science and art, technological innovation for the betterment of society, public debate on the issues of our time, the value of philanthropy, and access to education based on merit. The Great Hall at Cooper Union has served as a national forum for the exchange of ideas, from Abraham Lincoln's Cooper Union speech to recent addresses by Barack Obama. I am also drawn by Cooper Union's capacity to leverage and enrich the cultural and global vibrancy of New York City.

I invite you to tune in to the brief announcement ceremony, which will be streamed live Tuesday, February 8, at 10 a.m., by clicking on the following link:

I remain focused on the important work still to be done at Tufts, and am committed to ensuring a seamless transition to my successor.

While I will be sad to leave Tufts, I do so with the satisfaction that together we have brought this institution to a new level?brimming with confidence and proud of our distinctive place in higher education. Tufts will always have a special place in my heart because of its unique ethos of public service, its people?among the most authentic I have met?and the great things we have done to advance teaching, research, and service to humankind.

I have had the privilege of working with extraordinary people here at Tufts, starting with President Bacow. He and I have enjoyed an immensely productive relationship. The deans and the faculty have been imaginative partners in fulfilling the University's potential. My colleagues in the Provost's Office have given loyal and selfless service to me and the University. There are too many people to thank in this brief message, so please accept my collective thanks to all of you?the students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, friends, donors, Overseers and Trustees of Tufts University.

With warm regards,

Jamshed Bharucha
