Alumni Association Awards Dinner

Jamshed Bharucha
Provost and Senior Vice President
Remarks at TUAA Awards dinner
April 28, 2007

On behalf of the university, let me express my deep appreciation to the volunteer leadership of the Alumni Association for all the work you do for your alma mater. Because of you, our alumni are able to stay engaged with Tufts and connected with one another. A university cannot thrive without loyal, energetic alumni leaders; we are most fortunate to have you beaming the light on the hill out to our far-flung alumni body. I also want to thank our Alumni Relations staff for working so seamlessly with our busy volunteers.

The value to society of a university education is measured by the contributions of its graduates. This year we have another breathtaking group of winners of the Distinguished Service Awards and the Young Alumni Achievement Award. If this crop is any indication, Tufts can be proud to have served as a launching pad for some of the finest citizen-leaders of our nation.

Sean Callahan exemplifies Tufts’ commitment to global service, and Neil Chayet is as civically engaged as a citizen can aspire to be.

Dan Doherty has led us skillfully through some tricky terrain as Chair of the Tufts University Development Corporation. I have observed him in action with great admiration and am not surprised by his success. He has been a wise counselor and leader on the Athletics Board.

As a scientist and musician, I am fascinated by the way Lorenzo Lepore has woven together his twin passions for dental medicine and music, deploying the entrepreneurial spirit he no doubt acquired at Tufts.

Bernard Maney’s contributions are true to the best traditions of Tufts physicians – using his healing skills to help those who might otherwise not have access.

About Lisa Lax and Nancy Stern Winters, all I can say is: Wow! We are in awe of the way in which they have integrated their athletic prowess with their artistry. We are delighted with how authentically they captured the Tufts spirit in their campaign video: “Tufts is…”

I got to Ballou, but I never will get to Broadway. So I’m fortunate to be able to do so vicariously through our alumni. Andrea Gall Schmitt now works with an organization that provides medical and psychological assistance to torture survivors from over 65 countries.

What strikes me about all our award recipients is their manifest modesty in the face of such soaring achievement. That, too, is a Tufts quality.

Hosea Ballou said that Tufts would be an institution that sent its energies out into the world. Our award recipients – and our Alumni Association leaders – certainly have lived up to that vision.

Thank you.
