New Initiative to Strengthen PhD StipendsFebruary 11, 2005 Dear Members of the Tufts Community, I am delighted to announce a new program ? the University Graduate Competitiveness initiative - to strengthen Ph.D. education at Tufts University. Beginning with the Ph.D. class being recruited to start this Fall, Tufts will allocate $1 million per year from central University resources to make stipends more competitive with those of our peer institutions. I have asked Associate Provost Vincent Manno to coordinate this initiative. Each Dean will devise a plan that is appropriate to his or her School. In Schools where existing stipends are competitive, these resources may be used to secure the School's existing budget for Ph.D. programs. Questions about how this initiative would affect students and departments in particular Schools should be directed to the appropriate Deans, who will communicate directly to their students and faculty. Three overarching goals will guide the implementation of this program at the School level:
President Bacow has often observed that a great university is marked by great students and great faculty. Together with the Provost Fellowship program launched last year, the University Graduate Competitiveness initiative now puts Tufts in a position to recruit the best and most diverse group of Ph.D. students the faculty is capable of attracting. Thanks go to the Graduate Education Council, the Deans, and the Graduate Student Council for their role in making graduate support a priority, and to Steve Manos and Tom McGurty for their help with this initiative. We recognize that more work still needs to be done to support master's, doctoral and professional degree candidates, and we will continue to find ways to make Tufts attractive to the best and most diverse graduate student body. Securing the Ph.D. programs is hopefully only the first step in strengthening financial support for all our graduate and professional students. It should be made clear that the resources for this initiative are entirely new, and do not come at the expense of any other program. Our success in this initiative is vital to our collective future, as we seek to increase support for students -? undergraduate and graduate - ?and for faculty. We welcome your input and feedback as we endeavor to maximize the benefit of this initiative. Best regards, Jamshed Bharucha |
