Community InvolvementMany Saturday mornings - often braving rain, sleet or snow - Jamshed Bharucha and his wife, Shirley Mathews, pull up their sleeves, put on rubber gloves and boots, and head down to the banks of the Mystic River in Medford, Massachusetts. Along with Tufts faculty, staff, students, alumni, affiliates and community members, Bharucha and Mathews have joined the Tufts Water, Sustainability, Health, and Ecological Diversity (WaterSHED) Center to collect and remove trash bags of debris from the river. Their volunteer work is part of a joint University and community initiative to clean up the Mystic River by 2010. Founded in 1999 by Tufts' Schools of Engineering and Medicine, the WaterSHED Center promotes and supports the management of water resources for sustainable use and human and ecological health through research, education, and outreach activities. "The center is the focal point at Tufts for interdisciplinary aspects of water resources research, education and outreach," explains Paul Kirshen, of the civil and environmental engineering department at Tufts, who is the co-founder and center director. Spanning 76 square miles and comprising 21 communities, the Mystic River has suffered environmentally from the chemical processing plants and hazardous waste disposal sites that lined its banks for years. The WaterSHED Center's goal is to transform the Mystic River into a clean body of water for swimming, boating, fishing, and improved access for pedestrians and vehicles by the year 2010. Participating and Related Organizations:Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA ) - An advocate for the protection of the waters and related resources in the basin's 21 communities. Mystic Watershed Collaborative (MWC) - A partnership between Mystic River Watershed Association and Tufts University; the collaborative coordinates the activities of community-based organizations that are involved in watershed issues and work closely with municipal, state and federal agency staff who have watershed responsibilities. Tufts Water Watch (TWW) - A Tufts student organization helping surrounding communities to improve the water quality of their local watershed. Tufts Institute of the Environment (TIE) - An interdisciplinary, University-wide education and research institute which facilitates and coordinates environmental programs at the University. Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service - A center catalyzing civic engagement and community building by identifying and supporting Tufts students, faculty, staff and alumni and community partners who develop creative, effective approaches to active citizenship at the University and in communities around the world. Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) - A multidisciplinary academic center focusing on new approaches to curriculum, pedagogy, research and community outreach. |
